The third year of Waewae Kai Pakiaka kicked off on February 12th. Most of whānau were back and raring to go. The tamariki love the programme and especially their relationships with our kaikōkiri. The Kaikōkiri also really enjoy the programme and have had a couple of their own training sessions already this year to help kick off the year in good heart.
We were fortunate enough to continue to have funding to help keep the programme running. At the end of 2018 we had settled on a programme and breakdown that helped to keep the tamariki engaged and learning for the duration. Our kaikōkiri have had some more sessions learning to deal with conflict, organise and facilitate learning sessions, and reflect on and adapt the sessions to get better engagement.
After noticing last year that there were certain times within the sessions where engagement wasn’t as high as we’d hoped we have tried another iteration where kaikōkiri had activities organised and running as the tamariki arrived. We moved the kapa haka component to the beginning of the session which worked really well. This year we have also set tasks for Kaikōkiri so each had a turn planning and leading a game or activity, while the others supported.
This programme runs throughout the year during the school term on a Tuesday from 3:30pm to 5pm you can register your child here: https://forms.gle/QXnCHe84BqRD96uc7
