Our Titirei Leadership programme continues to mature, and we are still weaving those leadership opportunities through most of our initiatives.
The Titirei leadership programme was established to help support our young leaders to show their leadership skills in the group. This formal acknowledgement of those potential leaders made it easier for them to carry more responsibility within the group.
We like to start the year with this wānanga to get our leadership team together and for them to set their goals and the goals for the kapa's for the year. This year we upped the ante and organised more physical challenges. They had a biking challenge, an amazing race where they had to work in teams of three, a two-person canoe challenge and race, and a hīkoi to Aoraki. Interspersed within the physical challenges were wānanga on their personal goals for the year as Titirei, their goals for the kapa and some ground rules about how they work with each other.
Navigating your teenage years can be difficult enough without the added pressure that being Titirei in HWK adds. The expectations on this group are high, the way they’re expected to interact with each other, to lead and interact with the kapa and even how they act outside of HWK are responsibilities that can be difficult for them to carry. It was important for us to give them the space to step down from that level of leadership if they to, or the support them to continue.
We started the weekend n Friday night with a goal setting and expectations exercise. The next morning we rode the cycle track around Twizel ending up at the river for a swim and a manu masterclass from Manawa. That afternoon we headed down to the lagoon at Ruataniwha and completed a teamwork exercise with the canoe. The race was tightly contested but rightfully won by Taysha and Komene. Monique and Whetu came a close yet reluctant second, we're not really sure of the other place-getters but Abby and Corey languished in last place with a number of capsizes that hampered their efforts. That night we completed the amazing race on the bikes around Twizel, which was won by Taysha and Manawa supported by Te Atarau. On the final morning, we headed through to the Hooker Valley trail to the base of Aoraki before we headed home.
