In the second half of 2020 the Ministry of Education (MoE) and New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA), after years of persistent pressure from the Kapa Haka fraternity, have agreed to elevate Māori Performing Arts to a University Entrance Approved subject in NCEA, called Te Ao Haka.
We are fortunate to have been chosen to be part of the initial pilot of this kaupapa. It is offered at all 3 levels of NCEA, the assessments are both performance and theory based with the potential to achieve 20 credits at each level.
The pilot schools weren't chosen until late in 2020, which didn't give the schools enough time to add these classes to the timetables at either King's or Queen's. Instead we will be running two full block days three times a term.
We had a great turn out to our first session and are looking forward to what this kaupapa will offer our rakatahi in the years to come.
