HWK have been supporting the Kotahi Mano Kāika (KMK) Kura Reo and Kura Reo Rakatahi for a number of years now.
This was a five-day programme led by KMK and supported by HWK. 40 rakatahi from as far afield as Kerikeri, Ō-Tautahi, Murihiku, and Ōtepōti descended on the Tautuku Camp in the Catlins for a programme that focussed on reconnecting our rakatahi to their environment. The 40 Rakatahi of Kāi Tahu descent participated in the following activities:
• Whakawhanaungatanga games
• Te Reo Māori planning
• Mahinga Kai - Wero pātiki
• Hī ika - Fishing
• Waka ama
• Mau Rākau/ riki
• Haka and Waiata
• Whakapapa
• Native bush walks
• Making mokihi - Reed waka
Led by Steph Blair mahika kai expert and our own Trustee Paulette Tamati-Elliffe, manager of Kōtahi Mano Kāika, the rakatahi had an amazing time in the Tautuku environment. In the rivers fishing and trying to float their mōkihi, in the estuary trying to spear a pātiki or five, in the bush collecting rākau to use for āriki, and on the beach playing āriki.
