Monday practices started again on June 8 a week after the Alert Levels dropped to Alert Level 1. They were a bit piecemeal towards the end of Term 2 because there was still a lot apprehension about the virus. The fact that we no longer had the national competition to prepare for affected a number of people who decided to not to return. For those that did, we have a planned a trip through Wānaka, an exchange with the rakatahi from the Tititea Kapa Haka at Mount Aspiring College.
HWK Online Fitness 2020:
We had our first Sunday session for the year and completed an initial fitness test. The plan was to continue to work weekly, face to face on Sundays with a midweek online challenge and re-test again prior to the Term Two holidays.
Prior to Covid-19 Lockdown we had already instigated the online fitness sessions. Corey would post up a video of the exercises and how many you needed to do for the week. If you posted your video on our FB page then you wouldn't have to complete that set at the Sunday Haka Fit sessions.
We were in to the second week of these sessions when the Alert Levels were introduced and NZ moved to Alert Level 4. Although we had started the online session not having physical practices added to the difficulty of keeping people motivated to stay on top of their fitness goals. Some naturally did it because they wanted to or were self-motivated, but others need that extra motivation that face to face human interaction to help them. Much harder to do from a distance.
The initial results were good, some had kept a reasonable baseline from the work we had done the year before and others were fitter than when they started the year before. Primarily our contact is face to face on a Monday for Kapa Haka practices and Sundays for fitness and mau rākau. We cancelled our Mondays and Sundays from March 15. The KHKT National Committee cancelled Nationals on March 20. Through the lockdown period we tried to maintain commitment from a distance through fitness challenges. The 25 push ups for 25 days to support awareness of PTSD and Depression really caught on and a number of our rakatahi completed those daily sessions and posted them to the page. Some of our whānau really got in to the swing of things dressing up or challenging themselves to do different versions of push ups.
Here is a video of the online challenges started prior to the lockdown and then into the push up challenge.
Once we came out of Alert Level 4 and we could reinstate our face to face sessions we definitely had a drop off in numbers. Regardless Corey and Cherie maintained a weekly session of fitness and games. Those who did attend had a lot of fun and maintained a good level of fitness.
Team Sports
Netball
In Term 3 Cherie entered a HWK Social netball team that played in the weekly competition. The team made the finals and won the first half of that game. Unfortunately they were unable to maintain that and went down in the second half.
Touch
In Term 4 Corey has entered a mixed Social Touch team and they are enjoying playing every Tuesday, they have had a win and a draw so far, and it has energised some of our whānau who hadn't been back since after the lockdown
