Kiringāua received a surprise letter from Hogwarts inviting him to attend the launch of this new Māori language translation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. This is one of 4 new publications launched by the Kotahi Rau Pukapuka Trust. Their aim is to produce 100 new Māori language books to titillate the masses of speakers and learners alike, of te reo Māori. They launched four books last week, 'Mātāmua ko te Kupu' by Timoti Kāretu, 'Te Rūānuku' by Hemi Kelly, 'Nōu te Ao, e Hika e!' by Karena Kelly and 'Hare Pota me te Whatu Manapou' by Leon Blake.
We were welcomed on to the grounds of the Kura Kaupapa Māori o Hoani Waititi on the commemorative day of Parihaka. Although the rain was heavy, the hospitality of the hosts ensured that the spirits of those coming on to the marae were not dampened in any way. The day started deep in the heart of the tikanga of Hoani Waititi. The reciting of their karakia was felt keenly by all, and the house resounded as they celebrated the winners of the pīpī kōrero speech competitions and birthday celebrations of their students. The din level lifted another notch as they celebrated Paraone Gloyne's birthday as well.
Once we'd had our kai to finish off the pōwhiri process and the kura had entertained us again with waiata, the Māori satellite school of Hogwarts went in to session. We were split in to two groups with Karena Kelly and Paraone Gloyne ran a session on casting spells and new words. Professor McGonnagal (Pania Papa) and Professor Flitwick (Leon Blake) ran a session on riddles and the correct casting of spells (kīwaha).
That evening witches and wizards from the four houses Kiritoa (Gryffindor), Rawekoi (Ravenclaw), Hahupahu (Hufflepuff), and Nanakita (Slytherin) came out to again celebrate the lauch of this new book. Ahorangi Tamaratoa (Professor Dumbledore), the former principal of Hogwarts and reknowned wizard also made an appearance.
Thanks to Karena Kelly who, with a swish of her wand made this hui happen.
