Haratau Tuatahi - Kapa Haka First Practice 11 February 2019

Haruru ana te whenua i te haratau tuatahi o te tau mō te kapa. Our first practice for kapa haka for 2019 started with a bang. We had over 70 rakatahi turn up to our first practice. We may need to utilise the Takere group again that we instigated in 2018.

The big goal for performance in any year is usually either the national or regional competition, this year Murihiku is hosting the Te Hautoka Secondary School Regional Competition. Competition rules limit teams to 40 onstage performers. We will usually take 45 performers in our team to cover any emergencies. That leaves nearly 30 rakatahi, if we can hold on to all of them, who still need to work towards a performance goal for the year. We instigated the Takere team in 2018 to try and hold on to those who didn't make the competition team and worked with them to prepare for the Otago Polyfest. It worked well in 2018 and we may need to do it all over again this year.

We're looking forward to another great year with kapa. Karawhiua!
